This years tournament went very smoothly unlike last years event, we actual managed to complete the event on the planned two days....

We also avoided the rain for most of the tournament, with the exception of the very last presentation on the Saturday, which the Northbank U13 Boys had just won..

=============================================================

The winner of the raffle prize, a full Carlisle United team strip, at this years Northbank Summer Tournament, was Amy Miller whose daughter plays for Brampton u/12 girls.

2012

This years Northbank Tournament was the longest on record, starting in June and ending 2 months later in August. This wasn't due to a huge increase in entries, just another casualty of the wettest summer for years. We knew on the Friday evening in June when we arrived at Creighton Rugby Club to set up that the name 'Summer' tournament may not be an accurate description for the weekends event. Heavy and persistent rain made it very difficult to make the final preparations for the following day.

On Saturday at 7.30 the full extent of the overnight rain became apparent with a small lake on one pitch, huge puddles on another and the remaining 2 pitches too wet for a ball to roll more than a few feet.

Some age groups had to be cancelled but every manager accepted and fully understood the reasons for this and as a club we were very grateful for that understanding.

On the positive side we were able to play some of the age groups on temporary pitches and despite the conditions plenty of good football was enjoyed by those supporters brave enough to come out on this 'summer' day.

The age group winners for the weekend of Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th June were --

  • Girls u/10  -- Carlisle City (beating Stanwix 1-0 in the final.
  • Girls u/12  -- Northbank (beating Harraby Catholic in a penalty shoot out)
  • Girls u/14  -- Northbank (beating Northbank 'B' 2-0 in the final.
  • Boys u/10  -- Seaton (beating Warwick Wanderers in a penalty shoot out)
  • Boys u/12  -- Northbank (beating Northbank 'A' 2-1 in the final) (Winning the Bill Martin Cup)
  • Boys u/13  -- Carlisle City (beating Edenvale Vultures 2-0 in the final) (Winning the Kenny Dixon Trophy)

As you can see from the picture gallery of this years Tournament the pitch conditions gave some of the players an opportunity to celebrate in a very different way. We are very grateful and would like to thank our official phographer Tracey Wilkinson of Photos2Remember for providing the photographs of this years Tournament for our gallery.

We were able to re-arrange the cancelled age groups for Saturday 11th August and were fortunate to choose a day in this wet summer where the sun was shining and temperatures were into the mid 20's -- proper summer tournament weather at last!! These were ideal conditions for the younger age groups to properly enjoy their football and show off their skills. Boys teams at u/7 and u/8 played round robin non-competitive matches and the older age groups played for their respective trophies.

The age group winners for Saturday 11th August were --

  • Boys u/9 --  Stanwix FC
  • Boys u/11 - Newlaithes
  • Boys u/16 - Northbank 1970 (Winning the Keith Howlette Trophy)

The Bill Martin Cup was played for this year by the under 12 boys and it was a pleasure to have Bill present the trophy to a winning Northbank team in an all Northbank final.
Northbank1970 under 16's collected the Keith Howlette Trophy after finishing top of the league in a 4 team all Northbank event and the new Kenny Dixon trophy was played for at the under 13 age group and was won by Carlisle City Blues.

Once again we would like to extend our thanks to everyone at Creighton Rugby Club for their help and assistance in staging this years Tournament in very challenging conditions and to everyone else - players, coaches, parents and supporters -  thanks for being involved and making this years Tournament a success.
